New Jersey Parents Caucus Statewide Youth Group
NJPC’s Youth Group is comprised of children and youth who struggle with emotional and behavioral challenges, as well as their siblings. The Group provides a venue for youth to learn and grow, to better understand their challenges, inform the mental health system and government policy, reduce stigma and educate the public about mental health and improve the overall lives of their families and communities. NJPC Youth Group Seeks Poetry, Art, & Short Story Submissions
The Youth Group is seeking poetry, art, songs, and/or short stories from children throughout the state for their upcoming project on creativity. They will be publishing a book to show the creativity of new jersey children with special needs. All work must be sent in by September 30, 2007. If you send in your poetry, songs, or art first, it will be put on the cover of the book. For more information, email njpcyouthgroup@aol.com.
NJPC Youth Group Holds First Basketball Fundraiser
On August 4, NJPC's Statewide Youth Group held their first Basketball Tournament Fundraiser. There were 14 teams of four - 10 youth teams and 4 adult teams, with ages ranging from 11 to 49! The Basketball Tournament was held in Lake Hopatcong, NJ and there were about 50 fans rooting for the teams. The youth group also sold refreshments and received donations from the local Dunkin Donuts and Pathmark. The Group is raising money to send two members of the Youth Group to the Federation of Families Conference in Washington, DC in December - www.ffcmh.org. NJPC Youth Member Attends United Way of Morris Leadership Summit
Congratulations to David Crosby, a New Jersey Parents' Caucus Youth Coordinator, who was one of five students selected by the Jefferson Township Middle School to attend Youth Summit Day 2007, a special leadership opportunity, sponsored by United Way of Morris County, on May 11, 2007! David, along with other middle school students from throughout Morris County, participated in a variety of team-building and problem solving exercises to develop strong leadership skills. In addition, students had the opportunity to work with peer leaders from United Way's Youth Council and other groups.
Featured speakers included Drs. Vance and Vince Moss, twin brother surgeons who traveled to Afghanistan for an extraordinary mission, performing much needed surgery on as many locals as possible. Dr. Vance Moss, a Major in the US Army Reserve 344th Combat Support Hospital, and his identical twin brother, Dr. Vince Moss, a Major in the same unit, were dubbed as "Dogonogay": Same Face Healers during their special mission to Afghanistan.
