Cars Donation Program
Cars for NJPC Family Success was developed by the New Jersey Parents Caucus to assist needy families whose children struggle with emotional and behavioral challenges and have significant transportation needs and/or are making the transition from welfare to work by providing essential transportation. Families are referred by numerous non-profit organizations and agencies, as well as self-referrals.
The program began in 2006 when a generous couple purchased a new vehicle and wanted to donate their used car to the New Jersey Parents Caucus. The car was donated and the couple received a tax deduction for the value of the car. The car was then given to a woman with two special needs children who was having difficulty accessing much needed mental health services for her children and eager to work and sever her dependence the welfare system. With the donated vehicle, she was able to drive her children to their psychiatric appointments and begin her search for employment. She successfully found a sustaining job with a family-driven organization where she also received training and her welfare case was closed.
NJPC quickly recognized the further need for vehicles and placed ads on our website and started an Ebay Auction account where cars that were not salvageable, boats and other vehicles could be auctioned as a fundraising tool. The monies derived from the auctions could then be used to pay for auto repairs or to buy specific cars, such as a van with a wheelchair lift. Since then, we have also received a 25 ft. trailer donation that is used for our street outreach services – NJPC Mobile Outreach - throughout the state of New Jersey.
More used vehicles are being donated to our organization each week and more donors are receiving tax deductions for values higher than they would receive for selling their cars, and most importantly — many more families raising children with special needs have access to appropriate supports and services for their children and are living self-sufficient lives.
